These argumentive appeals are pretty simple to understand. Pathos is just an emotional appeal, persuading people by targeting their emotions, so to say. Logos is just the logic. Ethos is just the credibility.
In the first ad I am considering, the E*Trade commercial, we see the pathos is the appeal that stands out the most, the cuteness of the baby. You can't help but smile when seeing something so cute in front of your eyes, well for most people at least, thus hitting your emotions. Then there is the logos in the ad, which would have to be how they are advertising how their service is simple to use. Not only is it showing how simple their service is, but how, overall, the internet has become a place that just about all ages can easily access.
In my second ad, the Coca-Cola ad, we see these appeals taking place as well. To start off, we see logos taking place. We are able to see a familiar sight, politians arguing their own veiw on a certian thing. Next, we see pathos take off when one of the politians is jinxed by the other, demonstrating that everyone, even people of their stature, have some kind of child-like innocence in themselves.

Selene,
ReplyDeleteIt seems to me that the Coke ad might be a better choice. While I love the baby ads for Etrade, they don't seem to have much, if any, ethos. The Coke ad has all three elements, and might be easier to analzye. While I think the logos in the cola ad is weaker than the E-trade ad, it does have strong ethos, and equally strong pathos.
I like both ads you have chosen, but I feel the coke ad has a better appeal for a a paper as it has all three elements that you can bring out in the paper.
ReplyDeleteSelene-
ReplyDeleteIt seems like ethos is part of the Coke ad, too. Both the characters are important political figures and therefore credible.
Can't wait to see how you expand these ideas in your Essay 1.
