Update for Scrapbook

For my scrapbook I will be focusing on my future as a pharmacist through a powerpoint. The first of the slides will be used for my past. This slide will show how I was still in high school and decided this was the career choice for me. Here I'll incorporate how I was debating between two career choices, then how pharmacy was the final decision. The second slide will be of me now in the present. Here I will put pictures dealing with NMSU, my pre-requisite classes, and the UNM/NMSU Cooperative Prgram logo (if I am able to get it onto my computer). The third slide will show me entering and then graduating from the College of Pharmact at UNM. Here I will use logos from the school, a picture of a cap and gown, and such things. The last of the slides would be me in about twenty years showing where I have gotten after all my hard work. Through out all of the slides I am going to include picture dealing with the pharmacy profession such as the white coat, vials, the Rx symbo, pills, etc. As far as colors go, I'm still not too sure. I am thinking of using blue, red, green, and who knows what else, I will play around with the colors to see what works best for each of the slides. One other idea I have, for the fonts, would be different for each slide to show my feelings for each part of my life. For instance, take my future, I'm thinking of something fancy to show professionalism.

Scrapbook Assignment Idea

For this scrapbooking assigment I am leaning towards focusing on my funture career as a pharmacist. I will start off with how my interest in this field came to be, referrring to my past. I then will move on to my present, here I will show the school I am now attending (NMSU) and how I am working on my goal to get all my pre-requisites done with to get into the College of Pharmacy at UNM. Next, I will then focus on my future, which would be attending the College of Pharmacy, then my future self as an acutal pharmacist.

Oklahoma City Memorial

Looking through the websites of the Oklahma City Memorial, I got a feeling of sadness. Although I am not actully there, just seeing what the memorial consists of and reading the symbolism behind each element that is there, makes me think of all those innocent lives that were taken abruptly. The way the memorial was designed, in my opinion, was a great set up. It brings out all sorts of emotions, from sadness and sorrow to strength and peace. The way each elment represents something couldn't have been done in a better way. For instance, two of these elements that really stood out in my eyes were the Reflecting Pool and The Survivor Tree.
Reflecting Pool: The Reflecting Pool stood out to me quite a bit because, aside from being in the center of the whole memorial, it brings emotions of peace and serenity. Water is usually used to help soothe and bring a sense of calmness to people. So, by placing this at the center of it all, it helps bring that peace after such a horrible incident.
The Survivor Tree: This tree had to to be my favorite element. After such a tragic event, it still stands to this day, which is a remarkable thing. Although just about everything that was in the way of the violence got destroyed, this tree withstood such a powerful force. One other thing is that this tree happens to be an American Elk. When I read what type of tree it was, it brought a smile upon my face. Although America may go through hard times, at the end we come together to stand tall and show how much strength we have.

Photography Used as Composition

Photography can be used as composition in a few different ways, all due to the fact that it is a visual representaion of an untold story. With the use a photography one is able to get a clearer image of a story or just of a certain time period of one's life. In photographs there are many different aspects to consider, from the angle it has been taken from, the positions of the people in it, the clothing and hair styles of the people, the setting in which the photo was taken, and to the way the people are presenting themselves, to just name a few. Once one has taken all these aspects into consideration, it's basically like putting pieces of a puzzle together and making ties of the little things they have pulled out of the photograph to make it one big picture or , in this case, a story.

The picture I decided to go with is one of a few of my cousins and myself. I don't have it on my computer so I am unbale to show it to you guys. It shows all of us at my quincenera [a 15th birthday celebration that marks the beginning of a young girl's womanhood] posing for the camera standing in a gazebo , wearing big smiles on our faces. There are nine of us in the picture, six on standing and three sitting on the step leading up to the gazebo. We are all dressed up formally, the boys in tuxedos, the grils in red with white embroidered dresses, and myself in a white dress with a red sash across my waist.

This picture is one of my favorites that involves my cousins. Not every single one was able to be in it, the oldest and some of the younger ones are missing, but I still love it. I see it as a great representation of our culture and the love we have for one another, telling "Our Story" pretty good. Whenever we are all together we always make memories that each one of us cherishes, even though we might not be doing anything too exciting. In this certain picture it shows us celebrating our culture, as I have mentioned, and showing that it only brings us closer together, showing that bond we have. Although we may not see each other daily, have our own lives to live, have a baby to take care of, or are spending time with our friends or boyfriends/girlfriends, it's times like this that brings out our love for each other more than ever.

Thesis for Essay 2...

Technology has had such a huge impact in people's lives, especailly in this generation. It has gone through all sorts if advances, and will continue going through so many more, that it has made so many things so much easier for us to do. One perfect example would be how we are now able to communicate with people we have not seen in years, people who live far from us, or people we just don't find the time to see. Besides having the option to e-mail these people, there are now networking sites that make keeping in tough so much easier. One very popular of these networking sites would be MySpace. MySpace has all sorts of elements that make keeping in touch with one another fun. It has options that let people decorate their space to their liking, upload photos of their everyday lives, keep people updated with anything they like, and so much more. One very good thing about MySpace is that it isn't only for people who would like to keep in touch with others, but it is also for bands to promote their music or even for groups to help promote their cause. One of these groups would be To Write Love On Her Arms. MySpace is such a plus for groups, such as this one, because it helps them reach out to so many different people to make them arware of their cause, getting more help and support.

Technology Discourse Communities I Belong To and My Essay 2 Topic

The discourse communities I belong to are as follows:
First is MySpace. This is the community I am most active on, you can say. I got on to check if I have anything new to read just about everyday. I like using the networking site because I find it pretty neat how you can keep in touch with people you haven't seen in years or people who live far. Another networking site I belong to is Facebook. This site I am hardly on because I find it a bit more complicated to use, I prefer MySpace over this. Lastly, I belong to Tetrisfriends.com. When I am absolutely bored and have finshed any priorites I have to do, such as school work, I like to get on and play a couple games of tetris. lol

For the second essay I am leaning towards writing about MySpace. As far as my argument goes, I am not completely sure what it should be, but I am thinking along the line of how much MySpace has become such a big part of some people's lives or how much it has impacted the world. I am not too sure.

Discourse Communites

Communities I belong to:
NMSU, Pre-Pharmacy Major, UNM/NMSU Cooperative Pharmacy Program, Pre-Pharmacy Society, Classes, Friend workout group, Group of friends, Gadsden HS Alumni Band, Myspace, Facebook. This is all I could think of at the moment, I'm sure there's a few more that are just not coming into mind.

UNM/NMSU Cooperative Pharmacy Program: In this program I play the role of a student who got accepted into the program to help guide me through my future career as a pharmacist. In this certain group, we share a professional relationship amongst each other. There are a total of ten students who are actually in the program, along with four advisers that are there to help guide us. The language that is shared within the group is one of professinalism, as I just mentioned, and one of goals and priorities we have that we want to reach. With these goals and priorities, we make up our own community due to the fact that the jargon we tend to use will probably only be understood by ourselves and a few other people. The commonplace in use would have to be that, at times when we have certain duties, we are to dress perfessionally to show we are mature young adults that take our future seriously.

Gadsden High School Alumni Band: In this group my role is an alumni. This group is one that invites those who have been part of the Gadsden High School Band at any point in that past years since the school has been around. As long as you played to help cheer the school on, remember how to play your instrament and how to read music, then you are more than welcomed into this community. The commonplaces that are part of this community would be the uniforms we wear, simply being a polo shirt showing we are part of this band, the lingo, after all in order to understand what is going on you have to know and understand the music vocabulary that is being used, and lastly, the memories each one of us made while being part of the band during our high school years.

My group of friends: In my group of friends I play the role of, well, a friend. My friends and I are a group of people who are easy-going and friendly who just love to have a good time. Our language is however we chose to speak. We have days where we speak in a mature manner having serious conversations, while other days we just speak without thinking, being silly. We love to make new friends so with our easy-going attitudes it shows that everyone as welcomed. The commonplaces in this group would be our love of music, photos of memories we have made together, inside jokes that we have make along the years, and so much more.

Discourse Community and Commonplace

Discourse Community:
Discourse Community is s pretty simple concept. Basically, what it is is a group of people who share an interest of certain topics. Within this certain topic they share a body of knowledge on this topic, as well as a common vocabulary. Within their group, they have set goals they tend to want to achieve, focusing on use and analysis of written communication.

Commonplace:
In simple terms, all a commonplace is, is a place of familiarity to a group (ex: discourse community) using some kind(s) of images to help represent them. Examples of these images are icons, logos, signs, pictures, etc.

Ethos, Logos, and Pathos

These argumentive appeals are pretty simple to understand. Pathos is just an emotional appeal, persuading people by targeting their emotions, so to say. Logos is just the logic. Ethos is just the credibility.

In the first ad I am considering, the E*Trade commercial, we see the pathos is the appeal that stands out the most, the cuteness of the baby. You can't help but smile when seeing something so cute in front of your eyes, well for most people at least, thus hitting your emotions. Then there is the logos in the ad, which would have to be how they are advertising how their service is simple to use. Not only is it showing how simple their service is, but how, overall, the internet has become a place that just about all ages can easily access.

In my second ad, the Coca-Cola ad, we see these appeals taking place as well. To start off, we see logos taking place. We are able to see a familiar sight, politians arguing their own veiw on a certian thing. Next, we see pathos take off when one of the politians is jinxed by the other, demonstrating that everyone, even people of their stature, have some kind of child-like innocence in themselves.

Ads

The first ad I am considering is an E*Trade commercial. Having a baby be a star of this commercial is showing how now-a-days things can be easily accessed, no matter what your age may be. Placing him in front of a computer explaining how he has just bought stock shows that using E*Trade is so easy a baby can do it, persuading people to use their services and not to worry about it being so complicated. So, what better way to demonstrate this point, right? If this is the route I choose to go with, I'd write how using a baby uses an pathos appeal to people, as well as how the scenario as a whole makes people feel more confident about technology....

The second ad is a Coca-Cola commercial. I feel this commercial is a good example of how such little things can help people of different views come together. Showing two politicians of different sides arguing, then getting along with playing a simple silly game shows how even adults of their age can bring back out their child-like innocence. Using it's pathos appeal helps this stand out, especially with the happy-go-lucky music playing along with it.

WWII Poster

The poster I chose was Keep these Hands Off found in Part 2 under Warning! Our Homes are in Danger Now!This poster shows a women holding an infant in her arms with black hands with the Nazi symbol reaching out as if to get them. Using the woman and the infant expresses more of an emmotional appeal to people, especially showing that they are in danger. Using the blue color as the background shows that women are naturally more calm, so they probably used this to show that, even though she is in danger, she is trying her best to keep calm for her dear child. Aside from the blue color, the black hands reaching out clearly stands out quite a bit as well, especailly with them looking as if they belong to some kind of monsters.
Putting all these images together brings feelings of sorrow, fear, and despair. With the angle being level, face-to-face with the baby and mother, one is able to easily see her facial expression. Giving the people a clear view how many people were feeling at that time. Overall, I feel that this image was one that really hit people's emotional side, what's more sad than seeing a beautiful mother with her innocent child in danger.
